Have you ever been about a group of people who shared a frequent fire which you knew nothing about? Perhaps it is a particular game or activity, an artistic talent, or a job, but it's likely that without sharing the exact same passion you find it difficult to follow their dialogue. That is because you aren't a member of that discourse community. While they're talking the same language as you — English — the context of this discourse community alters the way language is used as well as the material of this language.

An area is a group of individuals connected for a common aim or purpose. So then a discourse community is a social group that's involved in discourse.
